Alright, let’s get real for a sec. Ever feel like an imposter when you’re about to post something online? How many times have you thought, “Who am I to post this?” Or maybe you’ve gotten stuck in the comparison loop, scrolling through Instagram and thinking, “Why does everyone else look so put-together?” Trust me, you’re not alone. That feeling, that little voice that makes you doubt yourself and your skills—it’s called imposter syndrome, and it shows up for all of us, especially when we’re stepping out of our comfort zone.
Today, I’m here to help you shake off that doubt and start showing up online with the confidence you deserve. We’ll break down what imposter syndrome is, why it’s holding you back, and some real, actionable steps to help you start showing up authentically, without feeling like you’re trying to impress anyone but your clients.
Let’s start by calling it what it is: imposter syndrome is just your underlying fear of being seen. It’s that sense of, “What if I’m not good enough?” or “What if people realize I’m just winging it?” But here’s the secret—everyone feels that way at some point, especially when they’re leveling up.
If you’re feeling imposter syndrome, that’s actually a good thing. It means you’re growing. The reason it feels uncomfortable is because you’re stepping into new territory. It’s your brain’s way of saying, “Whoa, we’ve never done this before!” Our brains are wired to keep us in our comfort zones where it feels “safe,” but real growth happens when you push beyond that comfort.
Think about your first day as a stylist. That nervousness, the little flutter in your stomach—that was your brain reacting to something new. You’ve overcome it before, and you can do it again.
Here’s a truth bomb: if you’re constantly scrolling and comparing yourself to other stylists online, you’re feeding your imposter syndrome. Social media is amazing for inspiration, but it’s so easy to get lost in other people’s stories. You see their “highlight reel” and suddenly start questioning your own work. Sound familiar?
Create more than you consume. This has been a game-changer for me. When I focus on creating content rather than consuming it, I get into a flow that feels good and genuine. It’s easier to remember why I’m doing this in the first place—to serve and attract clients, not to impress other stylists.
Pro tip: Unfollow or mute accounts that trigger self-doubt or make you feel like you’re not enough. You don’t have to keep seeing content that messes with your confidence! Fill your feed with people and content that inspire you. Follow accounts in other industries that align with your goals—think marketing, wellness, business tips—not just other hairstylists.
Imposter syndrome loves it when you focus on what you haven’t achieved. But you can flip the script by celebrating all the wins you have racked up, big or small. It’s so important to take a step back and actually recognize the incredible things you’re accomplishing.
One thing I swear by? Keep a “Win List.” This can be anything—a list on your phone, a journal, or a sticky note where you jot down every little win. That new color technique you nailed, the client who rebooked before even leaving the chair, the rave review that showed up online… all of these are wins worth celebrating.
When you start noticing and honoring your progress, you’ll build confidence in your skills, and that inner critic gets a little quieter. You’re doing amazing things—give yourself credit for it!
Social media is a fantastic tool for growing your business, but it can also be overwhelming if you’re on it with no boundaries. Let’s be real: if you’re spending hours scrolling, comparing, and second-guessing yourself, you’re giving imposter syndrome an open invitation.
Treat social media like a business tool, not entertainment. I know it’s easy to get sucked into mindless scrolling, but if you’re intentional with your time online, it can be a powerful asset for your business. I try to spend the majority of my time on Instagram creating content and connecting with clients—not just scrolling.
Tip: Set a timer. Spend 30 minutes engaging, posting, or planning content, and then get off the app. When you’re on social media with purpose, you’re less likely to feel drained or fall into comparison mode.
Here’s something I want you to remember: you’re not showing up online to impress other stylists or to gain approval from friends or family. You’re doing it to connect with your clients. Your future clients are out there, looking for someone with your style, your vibe, and your expertise. Show up for them.
You don’t have to be perfect. Showing up authentically will always resonate more than posting something perfectly curated. Think about what your clients want to see—tips, transformations, your unique personality—and post that. Every post doesn’t need to be groundbreaking. Just be yourself and remember, you’re bringing value.
Challenge for you: The next time you hesitate to post, ask yourself if you’re holding back because of fear of judgment. Then, remind yourself that it’s your clients you’re here to serve—not anyone else. Post it anyway, even if it’s a little scary!
Here’s the bottom line: building confidence online takes practice. The more you show up, the easier it will get. At first, it might feel awkward, maybe even terrifying, but each post, each little step you take is a rep that makes it feel more natural.
So here’s my challenge to you—commit to taking one small step this week. Maybe that’s celebrating a recent win, setting a timer for your social media use, or posting something you’re proud of. Whatever it is, remember that confidence comes from action. The more you do it, the more it’ll feel like second nature.
You’ve got this. Show up as your amazing, talented self and watch your confidence (and client list!) grow. Because when you’re authentically you, the right clients will be drawn to you. Keep putting yourself out there—you’re ready for this!
